Apiwe Nxusani-Mawela is a pioneering force in the South African craft beer industry. With a background in Microbiology and Biotechnology, she holds the distinction of being the first black female to own a brewery in South Africa. Apiwe is the founder of Tolokazi, a women-led, African-inspired brand of beer & ciders that blends traditional brewing heritage with modern sustainability and innovation.
Through her work at Brewsters Academy and Tolokazi, she champions diversity and equity in a sector historically dominated by men. Her award-winning brews - including the Wild African Soul, a fusion of traditional umqombothi and Belgian Saison - celebrate Africa’s rich brewing legacy while opening doors for the next generation of female brewers.
